The eagerly anticipated new album from Steppas Records: Alpha Steppa Meets Nai-Jah “The Great Elephant”. TGE is the product of a year-long collaboration between renowned UK Dub Reggae producer Alpha Steppa and Nigerian-French singer / songwriter Nai-Jah. TGE tells the story of Nai-Jah’s reality growing up in Nigeria, the album paints a picture of corruption, greed, and suffering, a narrative each and everyone accross the globe can relate to. Nai-Jah points to strength through unity and provides great inspiration and hope through his thoughtful lyrics and sincere delivery. Steppas Records is overjoyed to present the full album as a live soundsystem show, featuring Alpha Steppa, Nai-Jah & guests. A truly unique and powerful protest album sure to provoke, inspire and uplift.
Alpha Steppa (Steppas Records / Dub Dynasty / Trigram / DUBPL8)
The son and nephew of UK dub pioneers Alpha & Omega (Greensleeves/VP) and flag bearer of a rich musical lineage, Alpha Steppa has come to represent considerably more than just the ‘new school’ dub-roots-reggae hybrid productions he’s become globally known for. Crucially, his relevancy in clubs and festivals around the world is underpinned by a philosophy and ethos that promotes inclusivity and togetherness.
Having spent some formative years in Bristol’s fertile UK bass and dubstep scene circa 2008, coupled with foundations in traditional roots and dub, filtered through the myriad world music influences absorbed through his extensive travels, Alpha Steppa’s music speaks not only with a unique style and relevancy, but also carries a message.
Currently championed by a range of soundsystems and DJs from across the bass music spectrum – from roots veterans like Jah Shaka & Channel One, to UK steppas pioneers Iration Steppas and household dubstep names such as Rusko & VIVEK – Alpha Steppa and his label Steppas Records have become internationally known for what they call the ‘conscious bass music movement’.
Born into two different cultures, Nai-Jah grew up understanding the struggles and persecutions resulting from colonialism. He moved to France in 2006 where he eventually started a reggae/afro band, with the singularity of having a sousaphone as bass. Influenced from early age by traditional Igbo music and roots reggae, the band still tours Europe today.
It was at Dubcamp 2016 when Nai-Jah met with the dub movement and it’s desire to spread conscious and uplifting music. The meeting with Alpha Steppa paved the way for a deepened comprehension of the movement and a sincere mutual understanding and friendship.
The profound songwriting of Mahakwe A.K.A Nai-Jah, seizes conscious topics like the political struggle and corruption in his home country, Nigeria and of mankind’s never ending greed.
Nai-Jah has one goal, to shake up body and mind.
